Fishing Gears

In oceanic waters and inland waters, the main types of fishing are regulated by seven ordinances that essentially establish the characteristics of the gears that can be used, their maximum dimensions, areas of operation, fishing seasons, authorized mesh sizes and species to which capture is directed by setting minimum percentages of catching target species and establishing maximum percentage of accessory species. In some cases, these regulations provide for specific fisheries control measures.

If, with regard to trawl, gillnets and trammel nets, national regulations follow and reproduce, in part, the European Commission regulations on the matter, with regard to other gears, with no European legislation, national legislation establishes management measures based on the usual practices of fishing communities (traps and shore seines, for example).
